When setting up a compound document (one composed of smaller subdocuments or chapters), one of the laborious parts of creating your interface is building a "hypertext" table of contents. HTML.edit's Table of Contents feature is designed to simplify this process.
To use, simply place the insertion point at the intended location of the table of contents, then choose "Table of Contents - Documents" from the Anchor menu. A dialog box will be displayed. If you have labelled your documents (ie., by Chapter?), select the desired label or click on the "All Documents" button to use all documents in the editor. The table of contents will be inserted into your document.
You can also create a table of contents of the named anchors within the current document by choosing the "Table of Contents - Named Anchors" command from the Anchor menu. This creates a Unordered List (<UL></UL>) of the named anchors in the document, with the hypertext following each table of contents item being the text that the named anchor surrounds (the text between the <A NAME="foo"> and the </A>).
Why do some of the table entries display "*** untitled ***"?
The title of each document as it appears in the table of contents is that defined in the document Header using the HTML <TITLE> tags. Don't assume because your document has a filename that it has been titled. In the case of the named anchor table of contents, if no text appears between the named anchor tags, a similar "error message" will be inserted.
